Cheapest Homes 2012
We continue our look at where some of the cheapest homes are
in 2012. This is continued from the page; The
Cheapest Homes in 2012. Here are 17 more affordable communities.
The most recent additions are at the end.
Pueblo, CO
There are more than 100 houses for sale here right now for
less than $50,000. Many of them are less-than-perfect, but these
make great rental properties from what real estate agent friends
have told me, and there are some really nice houses mixed in
once you get closer to $100,000. 27 of the homes here are priced
at less than $30,000.
Traverse City, MI
A great place in the summer (I lived here for many years),
and now prices are reasonable. Although the properties under
$50,000 are mostly fixer uppers or condos, there are some nice
homes for under $100,000 for the first time in many years.

The following entries are covered in more detail on the page;
Most Affordable
Places to Live:
Alamogordo, NM
This desert town is one of the few places where prices have
been rising. The two dozen cheapest homes are all mobiles or
fixer-uppers out of town. You have to get past $100,000 to find
many decent ready-to-live-in houses.
Aberdeen, WA
There are 20 listings under $50,000 as I write this, with
the cheapest two being a mobile home for $9,000 and a small house
for $25,000. Get closer to 100k and there are some really nice
looking properties.
Hickory, NC
A dozen listings here are priced at under $30,000, and there
are dozens more for less than $50,000.
Colorado Springs, CO
Anything really inexpensive here is a condo or a fixer-upper,
but there are some good looking houses for just under $100,000.
Rawlins, WY
Only a couple properties are listed under our 50k mark, and
a couple dozen under 100k.
Marquette, MI
There is a three-bedroom fixer-upper with 1,700 square feet
for $17,900, and a couple more "cheapies." The rest
of the 18 listings below $100,000 are a mix of mobiles on land,
log cabins and older houses in town.
Butte MT
This former mining town is still cheap, with 33 listings under
$50,000, and many more under $100,000.
Austin, TX
To buy cheap here you have to look at condos. There dozens
for under $100,000 and a few decent-looking places for less than
50k as well. Some regular houses in good shape are selling for
around $100k.
Klamath Falls, OR
You'll find dozens of small houses and mobile homes for less
than $50,000 here (some of the mobiles are in parks, though,
which means you'll be paying lot rent). Stretch the criteria
to $100,000 and there are 165 listings at the moment.
Ridgecrest, CA
If you stay under 50k you are looking at mobile homes here,
but there are now dozens of houses for less than $100,000--that's
cheap for California!
.....
These next three towns are covered on Places
to Buy a Cheap House, which originally looked at towns with
houses under $30,000:
Altoona, PA
Altoona has a handful of old houses for less than $30,000,
and over 30 for less than $50,000.
Keokuk, IA
The first four listing on the page when searching this town
are; $9,900 (2 bedroom), $13,400 (2,008 square feet), $15,000
(6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms), and $16,000 (3 bedrooms). They appear
to be nice old homes in need of some work, but prices in general
are low here even for the ready-to-live-in places, with 30 listings
under $50,000. (23 under 30k.)
Independence, KS
$7,900, $11,000, $12,200, $14,900, and $17,000. Those are
the first five listings I pulled up for Independence, and none
of those were mobile homes. A total of 37 houses are for sale
for less than $50,000, with 17 of those under $30,000.
.....
Amherst, NY
This one is a new addition to our list. With a population
of over 115,000 you'll find everything you need here, and although
only a few houses are listed for around $50,000, there are condos
as well. A total of 80 properties come up when searching up to
$100,000 (with at least two bedrooms).
Morgantown, WV
If you like small-town living without getting too small, you
might like this little city of 30,000 residents. It is another
new addition to our list. The few listings under $50,000 are
fixer-uppers and/or out of town, but when you get to the 70s
and 80s there are some nice condos.
